Bio

Eliza Byard was born on November 25, 1822 at Chapel Place, London, England to William Thomas and Ann Stephens Byard. Eliza lost both parents at a young age and was raised by her mothers parents. At the age of twenty-seven, in 1849, Eliza left London to go to Port Elizabeth in South Africa to visit her sister and her husband John and Maria Wilks. George Kershaw was on the same ship going to South Africa to make a new life for himself. One evening there was an evening of entertainment on the deck. Eliza told the story of tripping over a traveling bag and a young man rushed over to pick her up. They looked into each other's eyes, laughed, and fell in love. This was George Kershaw. They spent much of their time together and before they arrived in South Africa they were engaged. They were married thirty days later, December 17, 1849 in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. They joined the LDS Church in 1852/53. And began to save their money so they could come to America. In 1865,46 members of the Church sailed from Port Elizabeth April 12, on the ship "Mexicana". The voyage took 67 days. George and his family were part of this group. George was hired as cook. A lot of the passengers became ill from dysentery. George was one of them, he was given some medicine, but he died. Another source suggests that he may have actually died from a drug over dose by the ships Captain as he had a heavy hand with the medicine. Arrived in New York Harbour on June 18th, and cast anchor about five. After 33 days, they had supplies for the journey to Utah. They traveled with a freight wagon train and most of them had to walk. They arrived in the Salt Lake Valley, November 11, 1865. Eliza was a petite lady, barely 5 feet tall. She had dark eyes and hair. It was said that she was a vivacious lady, willing to do just about anything. She died at nearly ninety-three years of age. She was buried in the Salt Lake City Cemetery. She was truly a great pioneer woman.
