Robert Stoddart was born in Brampton, England. He and his parents and siblings joined the LDS Church there and emigrated to Utah, being members of the first Handcart Company, the Ellsworth Company. Robert and his older brother, Caleb, had the job of milking the two cows in the company each day. They were paid by an extra pint of milk per day. Their mother said that this extra milk saved their lives on the trek. Robert was among those who went to help rescue the Willie Handcart Company.
