Bio

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints. Last Saturday, Mr. J. C. (Grandpa) Rice, aged 94, passed away at Temple, Texas, in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Osborn Richards. Mr. Rice had been in a weakened condition for some time on account of his advanced age. His remains were brought back to Alvord Saturday night by Rhyne's Funeral Home to the home of another daughter, Mrs. Tom Gray of near Alvord. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon by Elder Palmer of Oklahoma and Rev. Ross A. Smith of Alvord, after which his remains were laid to rest in the Pleasant hill cemetery beside his wife who had gone on in 1926. A large crowd of friends were present to extend sympathy and comfort to the bereaved ones in the passing of one who had lived among us for many years. Mr. Rice was a member of the Presbyterian church and was a most highly respected landmark of this section. J. C. Rice was born in Dade county, Missouri, Aug 14, 1847. He was married in the New Hope church to Miss Sarah Alwilda Jane Harris on Dec. 5, 1869. To this union were born seven children, three sons and four daughters, five of whom are living: Mrs. T. L. Gray, Alvord; W. J. Rice, Sunset; Mrs. Osborn Richards, Temple, Texas; James A. Rice, Apache, Okla; and Mrs. W. C. Hudspeth, Burkburnett. One daughter died in infancy. Other survivors and 23 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, six great great grandchildren, and one brother, John Rice of New Harp. Grandpa Rice came to Navarro county, Texas, in 1874, later moved to Bell county, then moved to Montague county in 1903. He has lived the past two years with his daughter in Temple.
