The Schads and the Beckers had two brothers marry two sisters=Peter Schad and his sister Katerine Schad married Margaret Becker and John Becker, respectivily. Peter was a Civil War veteran. His wife only spoke German. Peter and his brother John were in the Ninth Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. John died in the Civil War. The Ninth Wisconsin Infantry was organized at Camp Sigel, Milwaukee, WI, and mustered into service of the United States on October 26, 1861, it left the state on January 22, 1862, and proceeded to Fort Leavenworth, KS, which was reached on the 29th of the same month. On the 27 of November they were a part of, though not engaged, in the battle of Prairie Grove, December 7, 1862. They participated in numerous expetitions during 1863-1864 in Arkansas, taking part in the Battle of Jenkins Ferry, AR, April 30, 1864. The Ninth Regiment was mustered out January 30, 1866, and was disbanded at Madison, WI, Feb 14, 1866. Peter Schad, Sr came over from Germany with several other Schad families. He fought in the Civil War for the state of Wisconsin. His unit was the 9th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Co. B. His brother, John, was in the same unit but was killed. John is buried in the national cemetery in Little Rock, Arkansas. Peter Schad, Sr enrolled on 14SEP1861 at Sheboygan, Wisconsin for three years. He mustered out on 3DEC1864 at Milwaukee, Wisconsin. During the war, he was wounded on the left side around 2APR1864 near Spoonville, Arkansas. Peter Schad, Sr moved from Wisconsin in 1870 to Nebraska where he homesteaded 160 acres. He farmed this until March 1893. Peter then sold his property and moved to Lindsay, Nebraska. Where he ran a saloon in Lindsay, Nebraska for a year and a half. After the saloon, Peter opened an implement house for two years. He was an auctioneer in 1890 in Howells, Nebraska. The Schad Coat Of Arms dates back to 1385. One source of information shows the name SCHAD to mean one who destroyed property or who robbed or plundered; or a dweller in or near a moor or fen. I have learned that Peter Schad, Sr was only 4'11". There is a monument in Columbus, Nebraska dedicated to all the Civil War soldiers buried in Platte County, Nebraska. Peter Schad is listed on it.
