Bio

Jess Edward Love, 57 years old, a veteran Hutchinson County deputy sheriff, died at 10:50 p.m. Saturday in North Plains Hospital. Love was admitted to the hospital on Jan. 6 for treatment of a heart ailment. He reportedly had suffered several heart attacks in recent months. The family home is at 1112 N. Hedgecoke. Furneral [sic] arrangements are pending with Minton Funeral Home. Jess Edward Love was born Jan. 17, 1912, at Jacksboro, Tex. He attended school at Quitaque and his first job was with the Quitaque First National Bank. Love also had worked as a cowboy for many years and knew many of the oldtime cowhands and cattlemen in this area. He served for a time as foreman of the Watkins Ranch. Love went to work for the Hutchinson County sheriff's department in March, 1945 and worked for years in the capacity of process server. He also did outstanding work in criminal investigations. He was a member of the Methodist Church, the IOOF, Kiwanis Club and Rebekah Lodge. He married his wife, Thelma Doyle, at Turkey, on March 22, 1942. (Published in Borger News-Herald, Sunday, January 11, 1970) ----- Funeral services for Jess Edward Love, 57, are at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Walter G. White, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Carlton Thomson of First United Methodist Church. Final rites will be under the auspices of Adobe Walls Council 1355. Interment in Westlawn Memorial Park will be directed by Minton Mortuary. Love died at 10:50 p.m. Saturday in North Plains Hospital. He had served in the sheriff's department under two sheriffs, first Dale Lane, and for the past 22 years as deputy under Sheriff Hugh Anderson. Born Jan. 17, 1912 at Jacksboro, Love attended school at Quitaque, and held his first job at Quitaque First National Bank. Upon moving to Borger he worked as manager of Watkins Ranch in 1943, and joined the Borger police force two years later. Love was a member of Adobe Walls Masonic Lodge 1355, Eastern Star Chapter 1059, of which he was past worthy patron. He was a charter member and past president of Hutchinson County Sheriff's Posse and member of National Sheriff's Association and a graduate of the FBI School. He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Thelma; son Doyle of Borger, daughter, Mrs. C.R. Lyles of Borger; three brothers, Phillip, Salinas, Calif.; O.C. and Bill of Amarillo; four sisters, Mrs. Luther Barrett of Redding, Calif., Mrs. John Renfroe of Washington D.C., Mrs. W.A. Garvin, Mrs. J.R. Browder, both of Amarillo; seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Casketbearers are Hugh Anderson, C.A. Haren, Thomas Ramby, Jack Peoples, Bill Gill, Carroll Wiseman and Bob Fisher, Tommy Ware, Everett McCormick. Honorary casketbearers are H.L. Wilbanks, Coon Jeffers J.J. Hertel, Bill Gerner, Bill Barbro, Clarence Hodges, Denver Bench, Bob McCaby, Earl Regan, Lon Blackmon, and John Stotts. Masons are requested to meet at the lodge hall at 1 p.m. Tuesday to participate in the services.
