Bio

Gertrude (Werchan) Garrett passed peacefully into her Savior's arms in the early morning of the first day of spring, March 20, 2010, surrounded by the love of her children. Born the first of four children of Louis Werchan and Louise (Hackbarth) Werchan Feb. 22, 1917 near Taylor, her life was focused on work and duty to family and home. After high school she and a close friend established a beauty shop business in Taylor in the early 1940s. She married her husband of 64 years, Raymond G. Garrett, a graduate of veterinary medicine, in 1942, making their lives together in the Taylor - Thorndale area, and rearing three children, Susan (Garrett) Connell of Georgetown, Bill Garrett of Thorndale, and Thomas Garrett of Austin. Her life centered around many creative and productive interests as she developed her God-given talents as a devoted wife and mother, cook, seamstress, artist, quilter, gardener, antique enthusiast and veterinary nurse/assistant. All her energies were directed toward the goal of making a home. Her appreciation of her ability to be creative and productive carried her through her life's work, guided by a sense of fidelity and honesty. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two brothers, Lewis Werchan and Raymond Werchan. She is survived by her children, one grandchild Garrett Connell, her brother Jim Werchan and wife Darlene, sisters-in-law Irene Werchan and Dorothy Garrett as well as nephews and nieces. She is also survived by Lou Ann Towery, her friend and caregiver for the past four years. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice or to the SPJST Nursing Home (Attn: Ima Jean Weise, 500 East Lake Drive, Taylor, Texas 76574) as a tribute to the devoted care provided there. Funeral arrangements are being provided by Providence Funeral Home in Taylor. The funeral service will be 2 p.m., Sunday, March 28 at the Providence Funeral Home Chapel. A private interment will be at Taylor City Cemetery for family and friends at a later date.
