Wife of Laurel L. "Jack" Vorhies Married June 25, 1930 "AUGUSTA, Kan. - Eva Wilma Wornstaff Vorhies, 91, of Augusta, Kan., formerly of Keokuk died Oct. 16, 2001, in Augusta. She was born on May 13, 1910, in Indianola, the daughter of Marshall and Clara (Lee) Wornstaff. She married Laurel L. "Jack" Vorhies. He preceded her in death. Survivors include: two sons, Burlin Lee and his wife, Ilah, of Augusta and William Dean and his wife, Holly, of Keokuk; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and two daughters-in-law, Donna of St. Louis and Betty of La Jolla, Calif. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Marshall and Maurice and a great-granddaughter, Teresa Lynn Linson. She attended Des Moines University and Simpson College in Indianola before graduating in 1960 from Friends University in Wichita, Kan., with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. She then began working on her master's degree. She and her family moved to Keokuk during World War II when her husband was stationed aboard the Coast Guard cutter, Lantana. They lived here until 1956 when they moved to Kansas. She spent her entire adult life teaching. This included a number of rural schools, one of which was Wendy School, outside of Keokuk. She retired from the Wichita School District. She considered teaching to be one of life's highest callings and took great delight in a relative or friend pursuing a career in education. Mrs. Vorhies was a member of the Eastern Star and the Rebekahs, the PTA and numerous other organizations. She had a keen mind and loved to read, especially history, solve crossword puzzles and watch game shows, news and historic documentaries. Mrs. Vorhies was a talented musician, playing both piano and organ. She accompanied many groups and many students at contests. She also enjoyed watching sports, especially if her sons or grandchildren were involved. Mrs. Vorhies was a member of the First Baptist Church in Augusta and taught Sunday school there and many other places during her life. During the time the family lived in Keokuk, they were active in Trinity Methodist Church. Services were held Oct. 19 at the First Baptist Church in Augusta, with Pastor David Melton officiating. The organist was Majorie Melton. The couple is her granddaughter and her husband. Soloist was Laura Deckert, granddaughter of Mrs. Vorhies. Burial was in the Elmwood Cemetery in Augusta.
