Bio

Edward J Ehernberger, the eldest child of Jan Ehernberger and Katerina (Andrlik) Ehernberger, was born in Pusty Rybny Czechoslovakia. His siblings were: Kathryn Mary (Ehernberger) Rouse, Gerald Ehernberger, John Ehernberger, and Steve Ehernberger. Edward was a veteran of the Spanish-American War. He worked as a mill rite for Wells-Abbott Nieman Company that ground Puritan flour. He married Barbara (Dusek) Ehrenberger in 1898. Edward and Barbara had seven children: Albert Ehernberger, Ruth (Ehernberger) Larson, Martha (Ehernberger) Haines, Esther (Ehernberger) Shonka, Evelyn (Ehernberger) French, Helen (Ehernberger) Kasper, and a baby boy that that died with Barbara during childbirth in 1914. The children were taken in by family members from both sides (Dusek and Ehernberger), as everyone had children of their own and could not take in all six. Edward wanted to fulfill Barbara's dying wish by keeping the children together and raising them. Edward's mother, Katerine Ehernberger who was widowed, kept house for him and took care of the 5 older children. While Grandparents (Albert & Mary) Dusek along with Barbara's sister, Mary Dusek, stayed with Helen. Edward died of a strangulated hernia at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska in 1917. The children went back to the relatives they had lived with before. Brother, Gerald Ehernberger, ensured that money from Edward and Barbara's estate were distributed for care and education of the children. Relatives on both sides of the family stressed education. All six of Edward and Barbara's children graduated from Schuyler High School and went on to college.
