Son of Calvin M. Pilcher, Sr. and Virginia Alice Brown. Married Martha Jane Peacher in 1882. Note: Charles, who was born and raised in Bloomington, married Martha Jones in Fayette, also in Howard County, Missouri. He and Martha moved to Cisco, Texas in 1889, where he purchased a city block for $300.00, paying $100.00 down and the balance over then next three years. There, he and Martha opened up a resturaunt n the old City Hotel in downtown Cisco. They also operated the Arlington Heights Hotel, located on the city block that he had purchased. This hotel was a stop-over for the pasengers of the Texas & Pacific Railraod. Local oral history says that an old bank safe sat under a beautiful live oak tree in front of the hotel. It was used as a drinking trough for the horses. The Hotel was closed to the pubic in 1914. Eventually, the hotel was destroyed in a fire and the nearby barn collapsed. The other outbuildings disappeared over the years until there was nothing left of the Pilcher's block except memories. As a matter of note, Cisco is the town where Hilton built his first hotel. An item of note, family tradition says that Charles and his brother "Breck", walked from Missouri to Cisco, Texas where Charles became constable. Breck became constable in Ballinger. The family has long believed that Breckenridge Texas was named after "Uncle Breck." In addition to being a hotel owner, Charles was also the Constable of Cisco. He lost his right arm after being shot by a man resisting arrest. Sometime later, he was killed by a Lem Dubois who struck him in the head with a railroad pick. He is buried in the Pilcher family plot in Cisco. Charles and Martha had six sons: Charles (who died as an infant), Homer, Opha, Gomer, Charles and Ira. (via Pam Witherow)
