Bio

Joseph C. McDaniel, 81, Lake Wilson, died Thursday, March 18, 2004 at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne. Funeral services were Monday, March 22 at the Hartquist Funeral Chapel. Interment was at St. Martin Catholic Cemetery, Woodstock with military honors by the Lake Wilson American Legion and the Pipestone VFW Post #3814. Joseph Cyril McDaniel was born to Joseph E. and Sophie (Codr) McDaniel on March 18, 1923 in Morse Bluff, Neb. He grew up on several farms in the Morse Bluff area and attended country school. In 1941, he moved with his family to Calhoun, Iowa where he worked as a farm laborer. On September 21, 1943, he entered the U.S. Navy and served during World War II on the U.S.S. Petrof Bay. After his active discharge on March 10, 1946, he continued in the Naval Reserves until 1953. Following his discharge, he returned to Missouri Valley, Iowa. A short time later, he moved to Santa Monica, Calif. where he was employed as a painter. He married Doris Forrest on April 11, 1947 in Santa Monica. After they were married, they moved to Colorado Springs, Colo. and worked there as a painter for the next three years. In 1950, they moved back to Missouri Valley, Iowa where Joe started farming his parents' farm. In 1954, they moved to Milford, Iowa and farmed there until 1957 when they moved to Lake Wilson. They farmed several farms in the Lake Wilson area. In 1980, they moved to Urbana, Mo. where Joe worked at Hudson Foods and also drove school bus. In 1984, he returned to the farm in Chanarambie Township, near Lake Wilson. Doris preceded him in death on March 6, 2003. In November 2003, Joe was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He became a resident of the Minnesota Veterans Home on Feb. 23, 2004. While living in Lake Wilson, he attended St. Martin's Catholic Church in Woodstock. He was a member of the Herbert Holtke American Legion Post #285 in Lake Wilson and the VFW Post #3814 in Pipestone. He is survived by his nine children, John (Judy) McDaniel, Eden Prairie; Steven (Trish), Council Bluffs, Iowa; Paul (Sherri) McDaniel, Council Bluffs; Jean (David) Waldron, Lake Wilson; Thomas (Cathy) McDaniel, Council Bluffs; Cheryl (Don) Welu, Marshall; Earl (Bonnie) McDaniel, Madison, S.D.; Joel McDaniel, Lake Wilson and Dale (Kim) McDaniel, Mountain Lake; 23 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Geraldine Thurman, Freemont, Neb. and Mildred Beck, New Castle, Colo.; two brothers, Raymond McDaniel, Pisga, Iowa and Albert McDaniel, Isle; and special friend, Betty Crawford, Sioux Falls, S.D. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris and his brother, Francis McDaniel. (Hartquist Funeral Homes)
