daughter of Peter Anderson - Sarah Matthews ----- The Olney Enterprise (Olney, Tex.), vol. 24, no. 6, ed. 1, Friday, 11 May 1934, page 3 Obituary: Mrs. J. F. Dyer Monday afternoon, May 7th, at 1:30 o'clock, Mrs. J. F. Dyer died at her home in Olney after a week's illness of pneumonia. She lacked only three days spending eighty-seven years in this world; or seventeen years more than the Biblical three score years and ten. The fact that Mrs. Dyer came to Texas and settled in Parker county in the fall of 1882 when this section of Texas was sparsely settled stamped her as a true pioneer of Texas. The passing of such a brave spirit carries with it an added note of sorrow, for it was through the heroism and valor of the early settlers that the Lone Star State was made a reality. And Mrs. Dyer, like many other pioneers, possessed a gentle manner, but in time of danger her spirit was equal to the demand and to the occasion. Deceased was a member of the Christian Church, a dependable and thoughtful neighbor, a devoted wife and a loving mother. Throughout her many years of activity, life was gen to deeds of helpfulness and cooperation with her husband and in the interests of her family. Her memory will linger as a benediction to those who knew and loved her. Mr. J. F. Dyer (nee. Miss Sallie Marie Anderson) was born in Cookeville, Tennessee, and grew to young womanhood within one and one-half miles of J. F. Dyer who became her life companion. They were united in marriage May 18, 1873. To this very happy and life-long union were born six children, and all children survive the sainted mother. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Dyer came from Tennessee to Texas in the fall of 1882 and settled in Parker county. They lived in this county and engaged in farming for four years, and then moved to Hood county where they spent thirty years, and then moved to Young county where they have lived since that time. The children who survive the beloved mother are: Mrs. Fannie Holt of Frankston, Ed Dyer of New Mexico; Mrs. A. M. Watson of Lasara, Bob Dyer of Menard, Sam and Abe Dyer of Olney. Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist Church in Olney by Rev. T. H. Burton, a former pastor of the Olney Christian Church, Tuesday and interment was made in the New Cemetery immediately following. Pallbearers were: J. S. Cooper, Richard Suite, Chester Evans, Jess McDonald, C. C. Cunningham and Harlan Deets. The thoughtful children had planned a celebration for "mother" Dyer on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 13th in honor of her 87th birthday which was May 10th and in commemoration of her 61st wedding anniversary which comes on May 18th. This happy reunion of children joined in a three-way celebration for Mrs. Dyer can never be, but had she been spared it would have been added to the many other happy occasions of the Dyer family. May her spirit rest in peace as these dates pass and as her memory becomes an urge for her children to live in that way to inspire a hope for a future reunion of the family.
