Bio

Ernest Haskovec passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 14, 2010 as a result of recent health challenges. Ernest was born April 15, 1925 to Frank J. and Mildred Laznovsky Haskovec in Ennis, Texas. He was a life-long Ennis resident and a graduate of Ennis High School. On November 10, 1947 he married Ann Marusak, with whom he shared 56 years until Ann's passing in 2003. For many years he and Ann were part owners of H&H Hardware along with his sister Dolfie and her husband Johnie Hrabina. However, his calling was the land, and Ernest made his living as a farmer rancher. He held a life-long dedication to nurturing the home-place that his family settled in the early 1900's. His passion was working the land using common sense, hard work, vision, and innovation as his guide. During his lifetime, with extended family nearby, he appreciated ties to the land and his heritage. From 1955 through 1998, Ernest served as a director of the Ellis-Prairie Soil and Water Conservation District – time further exemplifying his concern, respect, and stewardship towards nature. Additionally, in keeping with his Czech heritage, he was a life-long member of the SPJST Lodge 25 in Ennis where he contributed service and leadership through work as Lodge President and insurance representative. Together, he and Ann found particular enjoyment in Czech music. Ernest was pre-deceased by his wife, Ann, his parents, and sisters Wilma Nesuda and Dolfie Hrabina. He is survived by daughter Janice and her husband Jerry Matthews of Austin, daughter Cynthia and her husband Don McCallum of Mansfield, and son Ronald and his wife Karen (nee Fleming) of Ennis. His five grandchildren are Victoria McCallum of Washington D.C., John McCallum of Austin, Douglas Haskovec and his wife Laura (nee Roth) of Houston, Daniel Haskovec and his fiance, Brandi Parish, both of College Station, and David Haskovec of College Station. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 pm on Friday February 19 with a 7 pm Rosary at the J.E. Keever Mortuary. Graveside services with final gathering and visitation among friends and family will be at 9 am on Saturday February 20 at the Myrtle Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Ernest's memory can be made to the charity of your choice. May the patriarch of our family rest in peace. ~ The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of nature. – Anne Frank
