Sarah Lewis was the only daughter among five sons of Daniel Lewis who was one of the early pioneers and first settlers in Silver Creek Township, he came from Kentucky and secured a Squatter's Claim in 1851. Sara Lewis married Adam Markel January 12, 1863. Three sons were born to them; Thomas Grant, Philip Sheridan and Daniel Lincoln Markel. ***************************** Sarah Ann Lewis was born Mar 25 1844 Franklin Twp., Des Moines County, Iowa and died Apr 07 1872 Mills County, Iowa. She had three known sister's. Mary was her half sister. She was married before they moved to Mills county. Then Sarah's older sister Margaret died in the wind storm that caused them to stay in Mills Co., they were headed for the California gold rush. She had another sister four years older than her and her name was Harriet. she died in the winter just before they left Des Moines County. She had nine brothers, only five lived to adulthood. Her oldest brother was George W. the next two died in infancy and we do not have their names, the next living brother was Daniel Lewis Jr. then the fifth brother was Henry Clay Lewis, the sixth Thomas J. died when he was 15 years old, the seventh Zachary T. died in infancy, the eighth was Winfield S., and the ninth was Millard F.
