Bio

Alfred Lee Mobley married Miss Billie Mae Tackett on 17 April 1942 at Las Vegas, Nevada, shortly before he was ordered overseas for duty. Capt. Alfred Lee Mobley was killed in an airplane incident at an airfield near Omaha, Nebraska when the B-26 heavy bomber had just taken off; the plane failed to gain altitude and fell into a lake over which it flew from the runway. Capt. Mobley had more than 70 combat missions in the south Pacific and was one of the six men killed in the crash. After taking part in the invasion of New Guinea Island and rolling up more than 200 hours of combat flying which won him the Distinguished Flying Cross, Mobley returned to the United States last fall in an instructor's role. He won an Air Medal and an Oak Leaf Cluster. At the age of 11, he became a member of the Red Top Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Graham High School and Texas A&M College, leaving the school as an agricultural engineer. Capt. Mobley went into the air service of the US Army in November 1941 and saw overseas service for more than a year at Guadalcanal and New Guinea, having 74 combat missions to his credit. He advanced step-by-step from flying cadet to the rank of captain in the combat air service in the new B-29 bombers that bombed industrial objectives in the Japanese homeland a few days ago. Services were held at the Methodist Church in Graham officiated by Revv. C.H. Cole, pastor, and Rev. Dallas Lee, pastor of First Baptist. Survived by his wife; his parents; three brothers - W.G. Mobley, T.P. Mobley, Jr, Jim L. Mobley; four sisters - Mrs. Bessie Mattox, Mrs. Irene Rothell, Mrs. Hazel Pyeatt, Miss Alice Mobley. Capt. Alfred Lee Mobley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Mobley, Graham, husband of Billie Tackett, attended Texas A&M. Entered AAC, 1941, trained in Calif. and Fla. Served in New Guinea, Guadalcanal, Hawaii, and Bougainville. Awarded DFC, Air Medal, 2 OLC, PTO, and 2 Battle Stars. Killed in Omaha, Neb., 1944. Contributed by Dorman Holub
