Ona Dawson was born Aug 17, 1894, to Martha Jane (Lowe) and Cyrus King Kade Kelsey in Huckabay, Erath County, Texas. Ona spent her childhood and graduated from high school in Estacado, Texas. She received her teaching certificate from the West Texas State Normal College, in Canyon, Texas. She taught school for a year in Crosbyton, Texas, before her marriage to Richard "Dick" Dawson, on Sept 5, 1915, in Crosbyton, Texas. He died Dec 8, 1970, in Grand Junction, Colorado. Ona enjoyed reading, especially, Louis L'Amour westerns, gardening, embroidery, crocheting, working crossword puzzles and playing the piano. She taught many of her grandchildren to sew on her treadle sewing machine and took them on asparagus hunts around the farm while sharing memories and telling them stories. She made life on the farm an adventure for her grand children combinding work with play. Many a time she gathered her grandchildren to rake leaves in a huge pile so they could run and jump in them. Later, the leaves would be raked up again and carried to the field to burn for a bonfire and hotdog roast. She enriched the lives of others by sharing little gems of wisdom she would find in newspapers and clipped them out to share. She believed in positive thinking and showed great courage and faith during the dust storms of the Texas panhandle when she became ill with TB while her children were young. She over came her illness and enjoyed good health the rest of her life. She was a gracious woman, excellent cook, loved her flowers and family. Her example of faith and integrity will be an endearing memory of her life for all who knew and loved her. Favorite saying: Live simply, Love generously, Care deeply, Speak kindly, Leave the rest to God.
