Published in The Memphis Democrat, Volume LX, Number 19, Memphis, Hall County, Texas, Thursday Afternoon, October 12, 1950, Page 1: Mother of Mayor Hodges Dies in California Oct. 11 Mrs. Alice A. Towle, long-time Memphis resident, died Wednesday evening, October 11, at 10:30 o'clock while visiting with relatives in La Mesa, Calif. She was 90 years of age. Mrs. Towle was the mother of Mayor C.C. Hodges. Date and time of funeral services had not been set Thursday morning, members of the family stated. Her body will be returned to Memphis for burial, and will arrive here late Sunday afternoon. ------------------ Published in The Memphis Democrat, Volume LX, Number 20, Memphis, Hall County, Texas, Thursday Afternoon, October 19, 1950, Page 12: Final Rites Held For Mrs. Towle Monday Afternoon Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at four o'clock in the First Methodist Church for Mrs. Alice A. Towle, 90, mother of Memphis Mayor C.C. Hodges. Mrs. Towle died in La Mesa, Calif., Wednesday, Oct. 11, while visiting her grandson, Weston C. Hodges. Rev. Rollo Davidson, minister of the First Methodist Church conducted the final rites. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery. Mrs. Towle was born September 17, 1860, in Granger, Mo. She married John J. Hodges January 31, 1878. Mr. Hodges died in 1915 and she married Charles Towle August 27, 1925. Mr. Towle preceeded her in death in 1939. She had lived in Memphis for the past 18 years. She united with the Methodist Church while young and had been a member for seventy years. Pall bearers were: W.B. Funk, Jimmie McMurry, Elmer C. Moore, Dr. J.A. McGee, W.I. Glosson Sr., and Ellis Veteto. Acting as honorary pall bearers were members of the city council: Wendell Harrison, H.J. Howell, Buster Helm, Frank Monzingo, Floyd Liner, J.W. Johnson, Horace Tarver, and J.J. Bice; City Secretary, D.L.C. Kinard, City Tax Collector, Glen Carlos; City Attorney, Sam Hamilton, City Chief of Police, L.L. Black, and City Fire Chief, Thomas Clayton. Flower Girls: Mrs. C.R. Webster, Mrs. C.E. Hankins, Mrs. A.B. Jones, Mrs. W.A. Thompson, Mrs. Anna Dickson, Mrs. Albert Gerlach, and Mrs. Clarence Maddox. Mrs. Tole is survived by a son, C.C. Hodges, Memphis; one sister, Mrs. Florence Bourgeois, Kahoka, Mo.; J.G. Adams, a brother, Mortensdale, Iowa; Weston C.
