Bio

John Thomas Moore, sometimes called Moon or Bud), son of John Wesley and Eliza Jane M. Warren Moore, was born July 16, 1875 in Clarksville, Johnson, Arkansas. In June 8, 1880, he was 4 years old living with his parents in Sherman, Johnson, Arkansas. On this census, he was shown as his nickname, Moon, He had two younger siblings, Sarah and William. In 1900, He was about 23 years old living with his father in Perry, Johnson Arkansas. Here he was called Bud. He was living with two younger brothers, William and Mike. His uncle, John Warren, also lived with them. John is his mother's brother. There was also a 14 year old cousin. His mother was not with them. She was 18 miles away with her 8 year old daughter, Nancy, staying with her 20 year old brother. On April 22, 1906, John married Dovie Jane Bailey, who was 10 years his junior, in Harrisburg, Poinsett, Arkansas. On April 16, 1910, they were living on Clarksville and Jasper Road in Sherman, Johnson, Arkansas in dwelling 23. John was 34 years old and Dovie was 25. They had one daughter, age 3, and lived with her father, Daniel Bailey, who was widowed, and her two sisters, Edie, 19, and Hattie K. 8. John was working as a Blacksmith and owned a Pawn Shop. They owned their own house and propery. In 1920, they still lived in Sherman but had moved to Ozone and Piney Road. They must have sold their Pawn Shop because now John was working as a farmer. They had three daughters Mary, age 12, Helen, age 7, and Ruth age 4 months. John's 72 year old widowed mother, Eliza, lived with them and a cousin, John Williams, who was 77 years old and widowed. On August 10, 1925, John's daughter, Helen, married Robert Lamar Cooper in Johnson County, Arkansas. He was from Russellville. In 1930, John and Dovie lived in Clarksville on Seveir Street. John worked with the Railroad as a bridge builder and Dovie worked as a seamstress at home. Dovie's sister, Holly, and her husband, John Shoffler, were living with them. On April 1, 1935, John and Dovie lived in Ft. Smith, Sebastian, Arkansas, then in 1940 were living on Roy Road in Clarksville. He was a bridge builder working for the Missouri Pacific Railroad and the value of his home was $1500.00. They lived in a house in town and not on a farm. His income was $1460.00 a year, which is roughly about $120.00 a week. John's widowed mother, Eliza, continue to live with them. She was 92 years old. In 1950, John was 74 years old and Dovie was 64. They lived on Rogers Street in Clarksville in dwelling 706 in an apartment. John still worked in Bridge and Building for the Railroad. Dovie worked as a Nurses Maid for an individual who was an invalid. Their daughter, Helen, age 37 was living with them. Helen was single at the time and kept house for her parents. They had a lodger, Jane Meyers, who was a 90 year old single person, never married from Indiana. Their daughter Ruth and her husband, Drayfus Bailey, also lived in the same household with their children, Gerald, age 15, and James age 13. John died on July 2, 1960 in Clarksville, Johnson, Arkansas and was buried at Oakland Cemetery. As per death certificate, John was born July 16, 1874 not 1875. His sister, Sarah, was born in December of 1875.
