Lightning Kills Bert O. Jones Funeral rites for Bert O. Jones, former Hall County farmer killed by lightning last Thursday afternnoon near Tulia, were conducted at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon in the First Baptist Church of Memphis. Rev. Elvis Pitts, pastor of the Newlin Baptist Church, officiated. Mr. Jones, 46 years old, was killed instantly by a bolt of lightning during a thunderstorm. At the time, he was operating a tractor to which a four-row planter was attached. His 17-year-old son, Ray, was driving another similarly equipped tractor a short distance away and saw the bolt strike his father. The youth was knocked from his machine but was able to get up. His father was knocked partially off his tractor and was dragged a short way before the machine ran into an irrigation ditch and was stopped. Ray went to a road that skirted the field and caught a ride to a farm house from where he telephoned for help. He was later treated at Swisher County Hospital in Tulia for shock and minor burns and was dismissed a few hours later. A native of Lampassas, Tex., Mr. Jones was born Aug. 16, 1909. He was married to Miss Vera Smith at Memphis, Dec. 22, 1928. The family lived in the Memphis area until 1953 when they moved to Swisher County. Mr. Jones was a member of the Baptist Church at Newlin. Among survivors are his wife; two sons, Ray and Kyle Jones; two daughters, Mrs. Dean Nolen of Tulia, and Mrs. Deaver Hamilton of Kress;s his parents, Mr. and Mrs. N.O. Jones; three brothers, Walker, Luther D. and Carlton Jones, all of Lampasas [sic]; a sister, Mrs. Sydney Addaway of Denver City, Tex.; and two grandchildren. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, under direction of Wallace Funeral home of Tulia. Mr. Jones was the second South Plains farmer killed by lightning within less than a week. Lee Poteet, 64, was killed four days earlier while working eight miles northwest of Olton.
