Bio

Pioneer Farmer Dies Leaving 200 Descendants Theophilus J Hardcastle, 82 died at his farm home, at Black Creek, seven miles west of Devine Thursday night, March 17 leaving over 200 living descendants. 13 children, 96 grandchildren and 104 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. He was the father of 8 sons and 8 daughters, all but 3 of the sons are living. He is survived by 4 living brothers, Elias Hardcastle of Devine, now 90 years old, Frank Hardcastle of High Rolls, N.M., Eli Hardcastle of Cameron and Elijah B Hardcastle of Brackettville. Deceased was a native of Alabama, lived most of his boyhood days in Milam County, Texas, coming to the farm where he died in 1876, more than 55 years ago. Hundreds of people, mostly relatives, attended the funeral at the Upper Black Creek Cemetery Friday afternoon, conducted by his pastor, Elder J.G. Grant of Luling, assisted by Editor W.L. Dubose and Rev. A.M. Foster of Devine. The sons are Samuel and Henry of Devine, Walter of Bell County, David of Killeen and Amos of Gonzales; the daughters are Mrs. K. Davis, La Pryor, Mrs. H. C. Douglass and Mrs. Hutch Brown of Frio county, Mrs. Osey Baker of Bell county and Mrs. David Baker of Yancey, Mrs. George Petty of Carrizo Springs, Mrs. Sam Avery of San Antonio and Mrs. Walter Hardcastle of Ingram. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ He married Mernerva Angeline "Annie" Thrailkill 15 Dec 1869. Offie and Mernerva were the parents of 16 children all linked below except William Monroe, Isiah Jackson, and T.J. Jr. Interesting to note: Theophilus died on the same day as his mother Susan Pate but in 1932.
