Bio

Peter Hobratschk was Wendish, born in Niedergurik Saschsen, Germany. He was the oldest surviving child of Andreas Hobratschk and Hanna Jacob. Peter's confirmation records have not been found, but his confirmation Bible, signed by three pastors, is still in the possession of a descendant. In 1881, when Peter was 20, his parents immigrated with him and his three younger brothers* to Texas. [or with Peter, two of their children plus another young male Hobratschk, possibly Peter's cousin?] The ship record has not been found. The family first settled at Warda, Lee County TX, where the parents purchased and farmed a 150 acre tract near Rabb's Creek in Fayette County. Peter marries Christiana Graf, another Wendish immigrant, on 14 Oct 1881 in Warda. Two weeks later the parents transfer the 150 acre tract to Peter, in exchange for continuing to live there and Peter providing them "wholesome food" and transportation to church. This arrangement apparently did not work out smoothly, as Peter and Christiana will convey the same tract back to his parents in 1886. His parents both die soon thereafter, and Peter ends up acquiring the tract by paying his brother's for their inherited interest. Peter and Christiana have four surviving children: Selma Maria, Johann/John Traugott, Emma Augusta, and Hermann Theodore. But there is a great deal of struggle and tragedy in Peter's family life. The second child is stillborn, then the next child John is born "crippled for life". There is another stillborn child as Herman was a twin but his twin brother did not survive. Christiana is only age 36 when she dies of septicemia related to childbirth, leaving Peter a widower with four children ages 6 - 14, one of those disabled. After the death of his parents and wife, Peter and children will move to Walburg, Williamson County TX, where they will all spend the rest of their lives as members of Zion Lutheran Church. Peter and his brothers receive an inheritance from Germany in 1903, so the family must have remained in contact with relatives there. Peter remarries to Maria Nietsch Mickan in 1904 but they divorce in 1912. She is a widow with children from her first marriage. Peter's crippled son John lives with his father until Peter's death, then with his siblings. Peter dies age 67 of stomach cancer and bladder issues and is buried at Zion. As of 2024 the cemetery has four generations of Peter Hobratschk descendants, and several still living in the area and active members of the church community.
