Obituary from The Herald Coaster, January 5, 2004: Otis Albert "O.A." Koebelen, 79, of Boling, died Thursday Jan. 1, 2004 at Spring Branch Medical Center in Houston after an extended illness. He was born Jan. 13, 1924 in Pleak to Otto and Minnie Koebelen. He graduated from Rosenberg High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp from 1942 until 1946 during World War II. Otis and Nolee Christ were united in marriage at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Rosenberg, on June 12, 1947. Otis was a devoted husband and father and was a resident of Boling since 1951 and was a former resident of Wharton and Rosenberg. Otis went to work at Texas Gulf Sulphur, Inc. Aug. 24, 1950 and worked for nearly 32 years as a heavy equipment operator until he retired Oct. 1, 1982. In May 1990 he took a part-time job with Wittig Grass Farm and then later with Central Turf until July 1995. Otis and Nolee were members of Christ The King parish in Newgulf, until it closed in 1967. They then became active in the development of St. Joseph Catholic Mission most notably by chairing the first three bazaars and in 1998 were recognized for 30 years of service to the parish. Otis was preceded in death by his father, Otto Koebelen; mother, Minnie Koebelen; sister, Lorene Telge; and brother, Dennis E. Koebelen. Survivors include his beloved wife of 56 years, Nolee Christ Koebelen of Boling; daughter, Christine Koebelen of Houston; daughter Thelma Jane Schulz and husband Dave, of Bleiblerville; daughter Wanda Ripple and husband John, of Houston; grandson Kyle Ripple; granddaughter, Bethany Ripple; step-granddaughters, Janice Schulz and April Schulz. Visitation was held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday Jan. 4, 2004, with a Rosary recited at 7 p.m., at St. Joseph Catholic Mission in Boling. A funeral mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday Jan. 5, 2004 at St. Joseph Catholic Mission with his cousin Monsignor Reginald Nesvadba officiating. Interment was held at 1 p.m. in West Gethsemane Cemetery, 3000 First St. in Rosenberg. Pallbearers were: Charles Bollom, August Brandl, Jr., Dan Brod, Charles Gerla, Johnny Krenek, and Albert Urbanek, Jr. Honorary Pallbearers were Richard Lane, Neil Banfield, Verlie Sherrill, all his co-workers at Texasgulf, all his friends at St. Joseph Catholic Mission, and Herman, Glen, Daniel, Bruce and Keith Wittig. The Koebelen Family would like to thank all of Otis' family and friends who helped to make his last year wonderful…with visits, cards, care and prayer. We would also like to thank the staff at Memorial Hermann Continuing Care Hospital and Memorial Spring Shadows Pines for all of their nurturing and loving care.
