Walter Owen Herndon, 79, of Dighton, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, at Hays Medical Center in Hays. He was born Sept. 29, 1930, in Scott City, to William Walter and Thelma Leota Owen Herndon. He grew up in the Amy area of Lane County, graduated from Dighton High School in 1948 and attended Ottawa University until entering the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, serving in the Signal Corps from 1953 to 1955. After his discharge from the service, he attended Kansas State University and Fort Hays State University. He graduated from LeTourneau Institute of Engineering in Longview, Texas, where he served as president of the Student Council. In 1961, he returned to the family farm in Lane County and was a lifelong farmer. Mr. Herndon was a member of Amy Baptist Church, the Colby Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, United Methodist Church Choir and Barney Masonic Lodge No. 279 of Dighton and a former member of the Lane County Hospital Board. His special love was barbershop music and he had twice been honored with the International Barbershop Editor of the Year recognition for his writings in the Barbershop Bulletin. On July 15, 1960, he married Patrycia Ann London in Longview. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Joel S. Herndon of Dighton; a daughter, Kendra Alana Herndon of Manhattan; and a sister, Doris Herndon Robb of Dighton. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James Presley Herndon. Funeral was at the United Methodist Church in Dighton. Burial was at Dighton Memorial Cemetery. Garden City Telegram 1/9/10
