Bio

Anchorage Daily News April 11, 2000 JAMES HACKETT HULBERT, 87, died April 8, 2000, at Valley Hospital surrounded by his family. Visitation was held at Valley Funeral Home, 151 E. Herning, Wasilla. A service was at the Palmer Pioneers' Home, followed by burial at the Wasilla Cemetery. Mr. Hulbert was born March 19, 1913, in Aberdeen, Wash., to George and Bertha Hulbert. He was raised in Seattle and then worked his way to Fairbanks on fishing vessels and sternwheelers. He entered the University of Alaska in 1938, receiving his degree in mining engineering. During World War II, the U.S. Bureau of Mines drafted him to search for strategic metals throughout the territory. In 1945, Mr. Hulbert married Frances Byrne in Palmer. They spent several adventurous years prospecting and mining for gold at Chicken in the Fortymile area. They then returned to Palmer, where Mr. Hulbert worked as an engineer for Matanuska Electric Association. Mr. Hulbert and his wife retired to Wasilla in 1978. When not on some world cruise, safari or prospecting trip, he could be found volunteering at Bishop's Attic in Palmer. He also volunteered his time to other service organizations. He enjoyed gardening, bowling, playing cribbage and watching his grandchildren. He and his wife moved to the Palmer Pioneers' Home in 1997. His family said: ''He was a true gentleman. His modesty and natural shyness were accompanied by a keen intelligence and a dry sense of humor. His honesty and ability to respect other people made him good friends wherever he went. A loving husband, father and grandfather who lived by the golden rule, he set the standard of excellence for our family.'' Mr. Hulbert is survived by his wife, Frances of Palmer; children and spouses, Kathy and Tommy Davis of Ellicott City, Md.; Ralph and Helen Hulbert of Palmer, Paul and Barbara Hulbert of Big Lake, and Janet Hulbert and Kevin Waring of Anchorage; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Donations are requested to the Sacred Heart Building Fund in Wasilla.
