Bio

Memorial for Eleanor McIntyre Born in North Platte, NE on Mar. 5, 1915 Departed on Jun. 5, 2009 and resided in Austin, TX. Service: Private Eleanor McIntyre of Austin died on June 5, 2009 at age 94. She is survived by: sons, Doug and Rob of Austin; daughter, Mary M. Davis of Livermore, CA; two brothers; one sister; six grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Eleanor was an excellent student at Hastings College in Nebraska, where she also lettered in three sports. After graduating, she worked as a teacher for two years. On a summer day in 1940, Eleanor married her college sweetheart, Ken McIntyre, at Arbor Lodge mansion in Nebraska City. He often bragged that they spent only $5.35 for the wedding and honeymoon, but the marriage prospered for over fifty years. After Ken joined the faculty at UT Austin, Eleanor became active in the University Ladies Club and the University United Methodist Church. However, she considered greatest accomplishment to be the nurturing of three happy kids. Before his death, Ken wrote the following sonnet, which was inspired by a famous poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning: Why do I love you? Let me count the ways. I love you for the years of peace I've known; Because of gentle care you've shown, And all the strength such constancy conveys. I love you for the restful home we share, The love of children whom we hold so dear; The humor, and the cheerful atmosphere, And all the beauty you've created there. I love you for the challenge of your mind, Which penetrates the issues of the day, For all the debts to you I can't repay, And all the memories I have enshrined. Your love for me has so enriched my life - - How fortunate I am that you're my wife! In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the memorial fund at University United Methodist Church (478-9387). Services will be private.
