The Marion Star, Marion, Ohio on Tuesday, Sep. 26, 1944, Page 1. CIVIL WAR VETERAN DIES AT SON'S HOME ASHLEY - Sept. 26 - Leonard Ladd Brown, 105, Civil War veteran, died at 12:30 this morning in the home of his only son, Arthur H. Brown, with whom he made his home. He had been in failing health for several weeks. Mr. Brown was born Nov. 10, 1838, near Terre Haute, IN, coming to Ohio at the age of three. He lived in Knox County until reaching manhood, then moving to Delaware County. His wife, Caroline, died in 1904. Mr. Brown's lifespan included pioneer hardships in the early years of his boyhood and service in the Civil War. When moving from Knox to Delaware County, his family came in a horse-drawn wagon, over roads that were little more than rock studded mud holes. The family worked clearing virgin timber on the land on which they settled. He enlisted in the Union Army on Sept. 13, 1864 at Camp Chase, Columbus. He was a member of Co. H of the 174th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, one of the last regiments raised in Ohio for one year service. He served under General Sherman during battles around Nashville, TN. In the battle of Cedars, near Murpheysboro, TN, he received a flesh wound on his leg. Incapacitated as a soldier for a short time, he remained on duty, serving on the wagons carrying provisions. Other battles on which he saw service included the siege of Decatur, AL, the Overall's Creek Battle, and the battle at Wise's Fork, N.C. His unit was mustered out at Charlotte, N.C. In 1938, when he celebrated his 100th birthday, a community birthday party was held, coupled with the annual party for veterans and their families, given by the auxiliary of Ashley Legionnairies. The auxiliary presented a dramatization of Mr. Brown's life and his Civil War experiences. Mr. Brown had always lived a vigorous life, suffering only slight illnesses due to his advanced age. In 1936, when he was 98, he was kicked by a horse and knocked unconsious. He was not immediately found, and his recuperation took almost a year. Since then, he has been unable to do hardwork, except for working in his garden. He has been seriously ill the past year. Military services will be held Thursday 2 p.m. in the Ashley Methodist Church. Burial will be made in Marlborough Cemetery, near Ashley.
