************************************************************ Obituary from the "Leigh World," published June 21, 1901, page 1: Geo. W. Wilbur was born Sept. 12th, 1842, in the state of Virginia and died at his home in Leigh, June 15th, 1901, after 4 or 5 days of severe illness, which was a complication of ailments to which he had been wrestling for 15 or 20 year or even more, many of them he contracted in the army. He enlisted in the army in 1861 after Lincoln's call for 500,000 men., served three years, and then re-enlisted and served 10 months when he was honorably discharged on account of his health. At the time of his death, he was a member of the G.A.R. Post in Leigh, and also a member of the M.E. church since 1890. He was buried by the G.A.R. Post in Leigh and the funeral sermon was preached by his pastor in the church Sunday p.m. Mr. Wilbur will be greatly missed not only in his own home and family but in the village of Leigh. He left to mourn his departure a loving wife, 3 daughters and 5 sons, all being present at his funeral except one son who is in the Philippines. Also he leaves many grandchildren and relatives and friends. ************************************************************ NOTE: On military paperwork (enlistment, pension, grave marker application, etc.) George's surname was recorded as "Wilburn. " On other paperwork (including GAR membership), he was recorded with the surname "Wilbur."
