Daughter of Mendle Eli & Rose Ann (Matlock) Westervelt. She grew up and received her education here and graduated from Scottsbluff High School with the class of 1941. She operated a linotype machine for the Scottsbluff Republican Newspaper for a time, and on May 2, 1943, she married Wayne Edward "Stub" Durnal at Harrisburg, Nebraska. While Stub was serving his country during World War Two, Barbara moved to Ligonier, Indiana where she also ran a linotype machine for the local newspaper. After his discharge from the service, she and Stub returned to Bayard, Nebraska where they owned and operated a farm until he died in 1982. In 1984, she began working for Regional West Medical Center as the "Inn Touch" manager, where she worked until her death. She had lived in Scottsbluff since 1986. Barbara was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Scottsbluff, P.E.O. Chapter GA in Scottsbluff and the American Legion Auxiliary. She had also served on the Bayard School Board and on the Morrill County Republican Committee. Survivors include her children Rebecca Ann "Beckie" Nelson of Naples, FL and Michael Wayne Durnal of Holdrege, NE, grandchildren Travis Nelson of Farmington, MN, Shane Nelson of Naples, FL, Levi Durnal of Mead, NE and Mariah Durnal of Holdrege, NE, sisters Jo Holaday of Sun Lakes, AZ, Corrine Heimbaugh of Phoenix, AZ, Billie Love of Tucson, AZ and Greta Deines of Kellogg, ID and a brother Ted Westervelt of Scottsbluff. She is also survived by six great grandchildren. Her parents, her husband, a sister Mickie Clayton and her daughter in law Adrienne "DeDe" Durnal preceded her in death.
