Bio

J. Wayne Sabey passed away on December 7, 2009 following a fifteen month battle with cancer. Wayne was born December 10, 1939 in Murray, Utah to Alfred John and Bertha Lind Sabey. He married Marie Bringhurst on September 10, 1964 in the Salt Lake Temple. Wayne served an LDS mission in Japan and developed a lifelong love for East Asia. He received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from BYU and a PhD in East Asian History from the University of Michigan and became an avid Michigan fan. He taught History at the University of Utah for several years, served as president of the Western American Language Institute in Salt Lake City, worked with the MBA program at Walden University, and most recently taught the World Civilization courses at the BYU Salt Lake Center. His love for teaching and learning was very evident throughout his life. Wayne loved the outdoors. He especially enjoyed hiking, nature photography, snow shoeing, and swimming. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving in numerous positions, gospel doctrine teacher being one of his favorites. He was also a veil and ordinance worker in the Salt Lake, St. George, and Jordan River Temples for many years. He is survived by his wife of forty-five years, Marie; children, Clark (Shauna), Colleen (Kevrin) Johnson, Carolyn (Ben) Jones, and Natasha; grandchildren, Alexandra, Jacob, Samantha, Jaden, Trevin, and Lauren; and siblings, Linda (Lee) Ashton, Jerrold (Linda), and Janice (Brent) Carroll. A viewing will be held on Friday, December 11, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., followed by Funeral Services at 12:00 p.m. in the Pebble Hills Ward Chapel, 8735 South Harvard Park Drive (1060 East), Sandy. Interment: Midvale City Cemetery. Published in the Deseret News from December 9 to December 10, 2009.
