Contribution made by Kelly Sharp-Geier FAG ID# 51217862 (descendant): Jesse is the son of Peter Graves and Mary Kivett Graves. Husband of Serena Cumae Cain Graves. When the Civil War started three of Peter's sons volunteered to serve in the 2nd Tennessee Volunteer Infantry Regiment. It's important to note that there were two main regiments known as the 2nd Tennessee Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War— one Confederate and one Union. Peters sons: Jacob Graves, Elias (Eli) Graves and Jesse Graves all volunteered and served on the Union side. 2nd Tennessee Infantry Regiment (Union) Organization: Organized at Camp Dick Robinson and Somerset, Kentucky, on September 28, 1861. Service: Attached to the Army of the Ohio and later the Army of the Cumberland. It was heavily involved in operations in East Tennessee, including a major engagement at Rogersville on November 6, 1863, where the regiment was largely captured. Mustered Out: The regiment served until August 3, 1865. Losses: Suffered heavy casualties, with 640 men lost during service, primarily from disease. On November 6 1863, The 2nd Tennessee Volunteer Infantry Regiment participated in the Battle of Rogersville at Big Creek in Hawkins County, Tennessee. 608 Union soldiers are believed to have participated in the battle and were captured by the Confederate Army at the battle site. Among those captured were Peter's sons Elias, Jacob, and Jesse . Elias and Jacob died in captivity. They were among those at the Civil War Prison at Andersonville, Georgia. The conditions were horrible. Sickness and starvation. Jesse survived. ∼ Occupation: Farmer, retired two years prior to death. Cause of death: Stomach trouble. Attending doctor listed as P.L. Palmer who was probably Dr. Paris Alton Palmer of Sharps Chapel, TN Peter Graves, son of Jesse, from Speedwell, Claiborne County, TN. was the death certificate informant.
