Bio

Howard "Red" Hammer, 91, died December 2, 2009 at Golden Plains Health Care Center, Hutchinson, Kansas. He was born April 22, 1918 at Ansley, Nebraska, the son of Harvey and Emma (Trout) Hammer. He married Leona Marie Rankin January 2, 1943 at Evanston, Wyoming. Mr. Hammer enjoyed working on ranches in Idaho as a young man. He served as a dental assistant in the United States Army during World War II, being stationed in England. Upon his discharge from the service, he spent his career as an auto mechanic and machinist, having his own business in Pratt, Kansas. He later worked in Junction City, Kansas. Following his retirement, he moved to Great Bend, Kansas, where he took up wood carving, which he thoroughly enjoyed for many years. Mr. Hammer was of the Christian faith. Survivors include his wife, Leona Marie Hammer, of the home; one son, Steve Hammer, Alta Dena, California; and one sister, Leone Mickelson, Spokane, Washington. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Al "Bud" Hammer and Jessie Hammer; and five sisters, Isa Anderson, Blanche Anderson, Bonnie Hoffman, Ollie Mae Hoffman, and Henryetta Hammer. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 5, 2009 at Bryant Funeral Home. Bishop Quinton Moore will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park. Friends may call from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., with family receiving friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, December 4, 2009 and from 9:00 a.m. to service time Saturday at Bryant Funeral Home.
