Obituary published August 5, 1990, page B10, Author: Cathy Leigh As family and friends grieve the death of Georgetown native Arthur Christian "Chris" Braun, they find consolation in knowing the 35-year-old died doing what he loved most in life - soaring in a naval assault aircraft. "He loved the Navy and the A-6 (an attack aircraft)," his mother, Roselle Braun of Georgetown, said. "His other loves were God and his family." Lt. Cmdr. Braun, a 1973 graduate of Georgetown High School, died July 24 in an aircraft accident during night flying exercises while assigned to the the USS Independence in the South China Sea off the Philippine Islands. His mother said Braun loved the challenge of acting as bombardier navigator in the two-seat aircraft. She said the pilot also died instantly in the accident. "To Chris, death was a reality," she said. "He was not afraid to die, so, therefore, he was not afraid to live. He really lived life to the fullest." After earning a bachelor's degree in mechanized agriculture from Texas A&M University, Chris Braun was commissioned an ensign through the Naval ROTC Program. He served as a navigator as well as an instructor during his military career. At Texas A&M University, Braun was a member of the Corps of Cadets and the Ross Volunteers. During his senior year, he served as his company commander in the corps. His military awards include the Navy Commendation Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Expeditionary Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with two bronze stars. Roselle Braun said although many people will miss her son, she knows that he would not want a lot of grieving. "We are having a memorial service on Aug. 11. It will be more a celebration of his life than a mourning of his death," she said. "I hope people will feel free to join in the laughter and the tears." The memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Davis Funeral Home in Georgetown. A military memorial service, including the traditional flag presentation ceremony, 21-gun salute and the Missing-Man Formation Fly-by, was held July 27 at the Whidbey Island Base Chapel on Whidbey Island, Washington. Roselle Braun explained that family and friends cannot start talking about Chris without laughter erupting. "He affected people that way," she said. Robert "Skip" Morse, a Georgetown attorney, said although Chris Braun was a brilliant young man, he was "still so normal and fun." Always an Aggie at heart, Chris Braun loved to tease the Morse family, who are devout Longhorns, he said. "If we left our house for a while, Chris would sneak in the house, and we would return to find things a little disturbed. "He loved to turn our Longhorn memorabilia upside down," he said. In lieu of flowers, Roselle Braun said it was her son's desire that contributions be made to the Children's Hospital Foundation of Seattle, Chris Braun Memorial Fund, P.O. Box C-5371, Seattle, Washington, 98105, or any children's charity. Chris Braun is survived by his mother; wife Carol Ann; daughters, Holly Christen, 5, and Lauren Rebecca, 3; and stepdaughter, Jennifer Leigh Braun, 18, all of Oak Harbor, Washington; sisters, Eliese Braun Teasdale, of Lubbock; Melinda Braun Johnson, of San Pedro, Calif.; and Janelle Braun, of Dallas; brother, Alan G.
