Bio

PANHANDLE, Jan. 5 (Special) - Mr. and Mrs. I.O. Ainsworth, Panhandle couple, were found dead in their home here today by a neighbor who called at their neat four-room cottage for a Sunday afternoon visit. Mr. Ainsworth was about 65 years old. His wife was about 60. Justice of the Peace Sam Lanning returned a verdict of death by asphyxiation at an inquest held in the home shortly after the bodies were discovered about 4:15 o'clock. Homer Harper, Panhandle truck driver, and his wife found Mrs. Ainsworth's body upright in a rocking chair near an open gas heater in the living room. Her husband's body was on the floor of the dining room. A partially smoked cigar was in his mouth. Sheriff Clarence Williams, who investigated, said the living room heater and kitchen range were both burning high. The investigation, in which Williams, Lanning, Deputy Sheriff Belmont Slagle and County Attorney H.H. Smith participated, indicated the Ainsworth's died sometime Thursday night or Friday morning. Mr. Smith said milk delivered to the home on Thursday evening had been taken into the house, but the Friday milk delivery remained outside. Lights were last seen burning in the home on Thursday evening. Sheriff Williams said a second rocking chair was near the fire. "Mr. Ainsworth apparently got up to open the front door when he was overcome by gas fumes." The sheriff said the front door of the small house was open about 4 inches when he arrived. Windows and the back door were tightly closed. Mr. Ainsworth was a driver for Panhandle Lumber Company. He and his wife had lived in Panhandle 30 years. Surviving are a son, William Ainsworth of Benson, Ariz., two daughters, Mrs. Verna Thompson, Las Vegas, N.M., and Mrs. Ruth Slape, Panhandle; and two grandchildren. The bodies lie in state at Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Home in Amarillo. Funeral arrangements are pending arrival of relatives.
