Cause of Death Accidental Drowning in the Brazos River at the mouth of the Bosque River Father Joseph Veselka Mother Sophie Sumbera ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ West Girl Drowns In Bosque River Miss Christine Veselka, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Veselka, who live seven miles east of this city, was drowned in the Bosque River at 8 p.m. last Friday when the boat in which she was riding with Arthur W. Nobles, Waco soldier on leave, capsized. The two were members of a fishing party, the boat in which they were riding apparently hitting a rock near the confluence of the Brazos and Bosque rivers where the tragedy occurred. Two other members of the party, Chesley Halbert and William West, both of West, threw a line to Nobles. John Hope, 66, of Waco, saw the line break, and he, Hope, then threw a stronger line, and with it pulled Nobles out of the water, unconscious. The soldier had struggled to save Miss Veselka until he himself was strangling. Waco firemen and other officers were called to the scene of the tragedy and immediately began dragging the river for the body which was finally recovered Saturday afternoon. Miss Veselka is survived by her parents; three brothers, Ben, Ed and Joe, Jr.; four sisters, Estelle, Stacy, Agnes and Sophie, all of West. Deceased was a resident of this community but had been employed in a Waco laundry. The West News, West, Texas, Volume 53, No. 2, Edition 1, Friday, June 5, 1942, page 1.
