West Woman Dies of Sleeping Sickness Mrs. Jannie Smajstrla, age 34, wife of C. J. Smajstrla of this community, passed away at Providence sanitarium, Waco, at 6:15 a.m. Sunday, August 29. It is reported that death resulted from an attack of sleeping sickness. Funeral services were held at the Catholic church here at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Rev. E. J. Polcak officiating. Interment was at the Catholic cemetery. Survivors are her husband; 4 children, Albert, John, Betty Louise, and Jerry Smajstrla, all of West; her father, John Schultz of Fort Worth. Mrs. Smajstrla was born in Yoakum, Texas, but had lived in this city most of her life, having been reared by Mr. and Mrs. Jim Maresh. Johnnie was born in 1903 in Yoakum in DeWitt County, Texas. Her mother passed away in 1909 and Johnnie was raised by her aunt Albina (Sulak) Maresh and James Maresh. The Maresh's also raised their nephew and Johnnie's first cousin Alphonse Schwenke. She died unexpectedly from encephalitis and was living in West at the time.
