Mr. Ernest J. Kudelka, 86, of West died Thursday, May 1, at a West nursing home. He was born February 27, 1917, in Ross, son of Joseph and Annie Chudej Kudelka, and attended schools in Ross and West. Hew served in the Army from 1940 until 1945 and received a Purple Heart for injuries in a battle at Naples. He married Lillian Hlavenka on August 6, 1946 in West. He was a bookkeeper for several area businesses including Scott Chevrolet and Uptmore Motors before retiring in 1990. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4819, Purple Heart Association, Knights of Columbus Council #2305 and KJT Society #31. He was a longtime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption. A brother, Raymond Kudelka and a sister, Willie Mae Cernosek, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, two sons, Kenneth Kudelka of Waco and James Kudelka and wife, Judy, of West; one daughter, Sharon Wilson and husband, Rory, of Valley Mills; six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Rosary was recited at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 1:15 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary's with Rev. Ed Karasek as celebrant. Military graveside rites followed at St. Mary's Cemetery, conducted by VFW Post #4819 of West.
