West Postman Donald C. Ashley Dies Friday At Age 59 Mr. Donald Clark Ashley, age 59, of 1104 N. Davis, West, died at 3:45 p.m. Friday in a West hospital. Rosary was recited at 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. George Doskocil. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West with Rev. George Doskocil as celebrant. Military graveside services followed at St. Mary's Cemetery in West. A native and life long resident of West, Mr. Ashley was an employee of the U.S. Post Office in West since June 1, 1937, having served as rural route carrier of Route 1, for the past 27 years. He was a veteran of WWII having served in the Pacific Theatre with the U.S. Navy. Mr. Ashley graduated from West High School in 1933 and was very interested in the athletic program in football, basketball, and tennis. He covered all West High School football games and was announcer for home games for a number of years. He also wrote the sports articles for the West News. He helped to organize the West Little League Program and coached one of the teams for 12 years. He also managed a softball team for the American Legion. He spent many years working with young people and was Boy Scout Scoutmaster in the mid 1930's until WWII. His father, Don Ashley, was coach of the "West Sluggers," an adult baseball team well-known in the Central Texas Region in the late 1920's. He married the former Angela Poncik in Dallas and was a member of the V.F.W. Post #4819, American Legion Post #478, both in West, and Elk's Lodge #166 in Elm Mott. He was a member of the West Welfare and had served as its secretary for a number of years. Survivors include his wife; his mother, Velma Ashley, of West; one son, Donald Ray Ashley, of Houston; two step-daughters, Mrs. Jimmy (Barbara) Greer, of Ft. Worth, and Mrs. Bill G. (Donna) Turner, of Teague; two brothers, Ray Ashley, of Chula Vista, California, and Bobby Ashley, of Anaheim, California; one aunt, Mrs. Thelma Walker, of Dallas; two grandchildren, Robert Ray Ashley, of Seattle, Washington, and Chance Michael Turner, of Teague; several nieces and nephews. The family requests memorials in the form of donations to the West Community Hospital in his memory. Pallbearers were Sandy Taylor, Emil Fridel, Jimmy Snokhous, Jimmy Kolacek, William F. Pareya, and Ernest Tobola, Sr. Honorary pallbearers were West Postal Employees, V.F.W. Post #4819 members, and American Legion Post #478 members.
