Tom Hammond was my youth pastor at Calvary Baptist Church in Grand Rapids, when the church was on Burton Street in the early to mid 1970's. Thomas Hammond was a loving husband & father, who devoted his life to spreading the Word of God. Tom died Friday, November 13, 2009 in an automobile accident. He was on his way to watch one of his favorite activities, high school football. He was going to watch Muskegon Heights play Berrien Springs at Grand Haven. He loved sports. Tom was also a great fan of the University of Michigan. He accepted Christ at the age of 8 at V.B.S. Tom graduated in 1966 from North Adams High School where he was a drum major. He then attended Grand Rapids School of the Bible and Music, where he met June and received his Seminary degree. He started his ministry as a youth pastor and served at several churches including Oneida Gospel Church, Westside Baptist in Rochester, NY, Church of the Open Door, Calvary Baptist Church. Later he served at Cedar Heights Baptist Church where he worked with Campus Bible Fellowship at the University of Northern Iowa. Then starting in 1989 he served as the senior pastor at Kent City Baptist Church for 14 years. For the past 5 years he has driven school bus for the Kent Intermediate School District and served as Chaplain of the Newaygo County Correctional Facility with Forgotten Man Ministries. Tom was passionate about God and telling everyone he could about God's Word & the love of Jesus. He married his wife, June Wickes on June 13, 1969, in Stanton, MI. They are the parents of four children. Tom loved to spend time with his children and eight grandchildren. Two years ago he returned to Stanton to be part of the installation of the new pastor, Ryan White and I was able to see Tom again. I'm a member of First Baptist. Ryan met Pastor Hammond because of his ministry in Iowa. Ryan came to Michigan to study and entered the ministry. When the church in Stanton called Ryan to be the head pastor, he invited Tom to be a part of the installation service. I visited with Pastor Hammond afterwards. He remembered me, where I lived and who I rode to church with. What a memory! Tom touched a countless number of people. The Lord has had a hand in it all. His humor, kindness and compassion for others will be missed. His son is quoted to say, "We're so thankful for the years we had with him. We're confident he's in Heaven with Jesus." A memorial service is planned for Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the Blythefield Hills Baptist Church, 6727 Kuttshill Drive NE, in Rockford. Memorials can be made to the Forgotten Man Ministry or The Thomas Hammond Memorial Fund. Tom's son started a Facebook page on remembering his father. Remembering Tom Hammond
