John Washington Gentry was the son of Simon Jackson Gentry, who was born in Edgefield County, South Carolina and Elizabeth E. Bates, who was born in Shelby County, Alabama. John's first wife was Martha 'Mattie' Jane Burton, who was born January 21, 1860 in Copper Hill, Parker County, Texas. Her parents were William Carroll Burton of Simpson County, Kentucky and Louisa J. Crow, who was born in Tennessee. John Gentry and Mattie Jane Burton were married about 1880 in Wise County, Texas. Mattie Jane gave birth to ten children before her death on September 4, 1898. She is laid to rest in the Sand Hill Cemetery close to her husband and four of their children. The 1900 Federal Census Record for Justice Precinct 1, Wise County, Texas, Dwelling #210 and Family #214, Enumerated June 15, 1900, lists John Gentry, age 46, Widowed, Farmer, born July 1859 in Mississippi, with father born in North Carolina and mother born in Alabama; Otis C. Gentry, age 17, son, born July 1886 in Texas; Zula Gentry, age 16, daughter, born November 1884 in Texas; Leslie J. Gentry, age 15, son, born May 1885 in Texas; William Gentry, age 12, son, born August 1887 in Texas; Bertha Gentry, age 11, daughter, born March 1889 in Texas; John W. Gentry, age 9, born January 1891 in Texas; Mary G. Gentry, age 7, daughter, born March 1893 in Texas; and Hattie J. Gentry, age 4, born August 1895 in Texas. John married Emma 'Emmer' J. [Eppright] Inman on December 5, 1910 in Decatur, Wise County, Texas. They owned and managed hotels and rooming houses in Sweetwater, Nolan County and San Angelo, Tom Green County until John's death on February 1, 1935. Emma's date of death and grave site remains unknown.
