Bio

Jonelle Queen Carpenter Sleeper, 91, of Bryan, Texas, passed away on Monday, November 2, 2009. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, November 4, at Hillier Funeral Home. Services are set for 9 a.m. Thursday, November 5, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. Jonelle was born on October 19, 1918, in Georgetown, Texas, to Elias B. "Bud" Queen and Alma Mary Nidever Queen. She was reared in Hewitt, Texas, went to Hewitt schools and graduated from Waco High School in 1937. After attending Texas Women's University in Denton, Texas, she and Coleman Riley Carpenter were married at the Hewitt Baptist Church on June 2, 1940. Coleman served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater in World War II. After the war, they moved to El Paso, Texas, to open the first Dairy Queen there. After earning her Bachelor of Science from Texas Western College, she began teaching school in 1965 in El Paso schools. She served as president of the Zeta chapter of the Alpha Delta Kappa, a teacher's sorority. She was a member of St. Alban's Church, where she was president of the Women of Saint Alban's Group. After Coleman passed away in 1984, Jonelle returned to Waco in 1986 and joined St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where she was active in St. Margaret's and St. Paul's guilds and was a member of the Daughters of the King. She also served as president of Les Nouvelles Amies, a new friends group associated with the Waco Federation of Women's Clubs. She was also active in the President's Club and served on the board of trustees for the Waco Federation of Women's Clubs. On December 5, 1989, she and Lt. Col. John Sleeper Jr., U.S. Air Force, retired, were married in Saint Paul's Episcopal Church. In 2005, they moved to Bryan and joined St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, where she was an active member and remained committed to the order of the Daughters of the King. Survivors include her husband, John Sleeper Jr.; son, Coleman Riley Carpenter II; grandsons, Brian Keith Carpenter, and Scott Coleman Carpenter and wife, Tereza, all of Maryland; great-grandson, Jackson Wyatt Carpenter, of Maryland; great-granddaughter, Montana Grace Carpenter, of Maryland; niece, Kay Jasek and husband, Ed, of McGregor, Texas; nephew, Dick Bowen and wife, Dee, of Junction, Texas; stepchildren, Susan Messick, of Anthony, Kan., John Sleeper III and wife, Sharon, of College Station, Jan Daniel and husband, Bill, of Humble, Texas, Karen Balke and husband, Keith, of Spring, Texas; and nine step-grandchildren, seven step-great-grandchildren, two great-nieces, a great-nephew, and a great-great-niece.
