Bio

Ray "Steve" Stephenson, 83, of Amarillo died Monday, Oct. 12, 2009. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd., with Gene Shelburne, pastor of Anna Street Church of Christ and the Rev. Roy S. Wheeler, pastor of Hillside Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mr. Stephenson was born Jan. 5, 1926, in Trent to James and Bessie Wood Stephenson. He was the last surviving sibling of eight children. Upon graduation from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served the last two years of World War II as a petty officer in the Naval Air Corps on the aircraft carrier USS Bunker Hill. He was recalled into service during the Korean conflict and served on the aircraft carrier USS Philippine Sea. Upon return from service, Mr. Stephenson was employed by Pantex. During his years at Pantex, his coworkers affectionately called him "Doc." He retired in 1994 from the metrology lab after 42 years of employment. Mr. Stephenson married Ramona Jean Gruhlkey in 1948 in First Christian Church in Amarillo. They had two daughters. Mr. and Mrs. Stephenson were married for 61 years. Mr. Stephenson died peacefully at home after a lengthy illness and courageous battle. He showed great strength, kindness and patience in dealing with his illness and those around him. He was a loving husband and father who will be greatly missed. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Dr. Pablo Rodriguez, Dr. Mark Drew, friends, neighbors and caregivers for their many kindnesses during the past nine years. He was preceded in death by his parents and all his siblings. Survivors include his wife, Ramona Stephenson; two daughters, Polly Loffland of Derby, Kan., and Stacy Smith of Dumas; and his beloved dog and friend, Caitie.
