Bio

Beginning Oct. 25, 2005, and onward, Dorothy Maxine (Shaffer) Hemenway will now dance in Heaven for eternity with her husband of 52 years, Harper Arthur Hemenway. Funeral Mass services will be at 10:3 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Copperas Cove. Graveside services will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Marble Falls City Cemetery. Maxine was born in Marble Falls, Texas, to the late John and Iris Shaffer. She graduated from Marble Falls High School in 1945. After completing Draughon's Business College, Maxine started her civil service career with the Veteran's Administration in San Antonio, Texas. On Halloween evening, October, 1948, Maxine met her future husband, Harper, for the first time, at a USO dance in San Antonio. She continued her federal service in Japan and at Ft. Hood, as a technical editor writer for the Operational Test Command, and after 34 years, she retired at Ft. Hood, Texas. Always active, Maxine started a second career and joined her daughter, Carla, and formed the College of Cosmetology, Inc., in 1981. Maxine enrolled as the first student in the school to become a licensed cosmetologist. She then continued on to become an instructor and remained administrator of the College of Cosmetology until her retirement in 1998. Maxine also was a charter member of the Five Hills Chapter of the American Business Women's Association, and held all the offices in ABWA including being Ameridan Business Woman of the Year and Business Associate of the Year. She served as president of the Central Texas Youth Services, was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and served on the parish finance committee. She enjoyed being a member of the American Contract Bridge League. Being a military family and traveling worldwide, Maxine and Harper lovingly raised a family of five sons and one daughter. Maxine was preceded in death by her husband; son, Charles Ray Hemenway; and a brother, Wendell Shaffer, of Austin. Survivors include daughter, Carla Kay Wright, of Harker Heights; sons, John Richard Hemenway, of Waco, Joe Harper hemenway, of Portland, Texas, Brent Patrick Hemenway, of Copperas cove, and Kent Michael Hemenway, of Killeen; six grandsons; four granddaughters; sister Johnette Shaffer fisher of Longview; and brother, Gerald Shafer, of Marble Falls.
