Bio

Vera Mildred Gerbitz, 77, of Sterling, died Wednesday, Dec. .6, 1995, in Sterling. Visitation and viewing began this morning at Chaney-Walters Funeral Home. Funeral is 10 a.m. is Friday at Chaney-Walters Funeral Home with the Rev. Rick Lewis officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Gerbitz was born Nov. 21, 1918, to Lawrence and Zora Mae (Jackson) Innes in Sterling. She worked at St. Benedict Hospital after graduating from Logan County High School. She then went to Denver where she worked as a nanny for six months. She returned to Sterling in 1942 to help care for her ill mother. She married Martin Gerbitz July 3, 1942, in Sidney, Neb. After their marriage, they lived in northeastern Colorado where Mr. Gerbitz worked as a farm hand and Mrs. Gerbitz was a mother and housewife. In 1963, they moved to Adams County where she took in ironing and babysat until they retired to Sterling in 1987. In 1989, they moved into Brigadoon Village. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. Mrs. Gerbitz is survived by her husand Martin of Sterling; five sons, Ernest of Morrison, Larry and wife Gwen of New Boston, Ill., Edward of Padroni, Richard and wife Jean of Sterling, and Royce of Westminster; three daughters, Sherrill County and husband Bill of Sterling, Diana Gerbitz of Great Falls, Mont., and Elizabeth Langmacker and husband Kevin of Dacono; four brothers, Carl of Denver, Virgil of Englewood, and Lefty.and Don, both of California; two sisters, Clella Gerbitz of Sterling and Betty Brown of Holbrook, Neb.; 11 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Vera Gerbitz Memorial Fund.
