Bio

Son of W. B. and Susan A. Knight Lindley Suggested edit: The Pittsburg Gazette, Pittsburg, Texas, Friday Morning, February 26, 1904, page 2: Tom Lindley Killed Near Winnsboro A warrent is out for the arrest of Buren Ray, charged with the killing of Thomas Lindley, in this county, Monday afternoon, on the Gilmer road, about two and one half miles Southwest of Winnsboro. Both parties live in the vicinity of the tragedy, reliable details of which have not been fully obtained. It seems, however, from what is learned, that Lindley was returning home in his wagon, having been in Winnsboro with hogs, for the market. He was accompanied by two other men, who state that Ray stepped in front of the team from the side of the road, presenting a double barrel shotgun, and ordered all three to get out of the wagon. When they had gotten out, it is said that Ray, after applying a few abusive epithets to Lindley, shot him down and made his escape. Lindley died almost instantly. He was a bachelor, about 45 years old and lived with his father, Wm Lindley. Ray is a man of family, and lived about a half mile from where he committed the killing. As to the cause, or provocation, it is said the two had some previous misunderstandings, and Lindley had filed a suit against Ray for an amount claimed to be due on a settlement. Winnsboro Wide-Awake The Pittsburg Gazette, Pittsburg, Texas, Friday Morning, March 4, 1905: Arrested for Crime Committed Near Winnsboro Buren Ray was arrested a few miles from Naples Saturday, by the sheriff of Franklin County and carried to Winnsboro Sunday via Pittsburg. The crime for which he is charged is the murder of Tom Lindley, an account of which appeared in last week's GAZETTE. Ray made his escape after the tragedy and was not apprehended until the latter part of last week, when it was learned that he was stopping at the home of his uncle. Both are now under arrest.
