AZLE -- R. Robert Wright Jr., 73, a retired law enforcement officer, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, in Azle. Graveside service: 2:30 p.m. Friday in Newsom Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at White's Azle Funeral Home. R. Robert Wright Jr. was born Dec. 16, 1931, in Azle to Ruth Landers Wright and R. Robert Wright Sr. He attended Azle schools from first to 12th grade. Robert was the third student at Azle to receive the Lone Star Farmers Award. While attending Arlington State College he joined the Marine Air Wing Reserve. He and his wife, Johnnie Merck, were married on Nov. 10, 1951, at Silver Creek Church. Robert was with the Department of Public Safety for 25 years, during which time he received advanced certification in law enforcement. He retired from the Department of Public Safety in 1978 due to complications of muscular sclerosis. Robert was a loving family member, living and working on the farm that his mother and dad bought in 1936. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Judy Ella Wright. Survivors: Wife, Johnnie; son, Weldon Leigh Wright and wife, Sarah; grandsons, Zachary Leigh Wright and Robert Alex Wright; granddaughter, Gemma Ella Katherine Wright; great-grandchildren, Bobby Daye Wright and Jesse Kay Wright; and sister, Nancy Brown and husband, Charlie, of Springtown.
