Bio

Duane Coleman, 59, a former Manhattan resident, died Wednesday at the Broadwater Hospital after a lingering illness. He was born April 24, 1924, at Burwell, Nebraska, to Elic and Dora Coleman. In 1940 he came to the Gallatin Valley and settled at Manhattan, where he worked as a carpenter and sign painter. He lived there until 1966 when he moved to Seattle, Washington, where he also worked as a carpenter. In 1979 he retired and moved to Townsend, where he had lived ever since. Coleman liked fishing and hunting and built wood-burning stoves as a hobby. He was also an amateur artist. Survivors include his wife, June, of Townsend; three daughters, Mrs. Ron (Linda) MacLennon of Townsend, Mrs. Larry (Sandra) Westfall of Helena, and Janine Lyon of Bozeman; three sons, Ron Coleman of Townsend, Gary Coleman of Seattle, and Mike Coleman of Bozeman; two brothers, Lloyd Coleman of Cameron and Bill Coleman of Atkinson, Nebraska; four sisters, Elva Yocum of Taylor, Nebraska, Ellen Smith of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Francis Hall of Vashon Island, Washington, and Marie Boag of Taylor, Nebraska,; 13 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Graveside services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Deep Creek Cemetery at Townsend. Connors Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Memorials are preferred to American Cancer Society.
