Mr. Joseph Edward Valek, 87, passed away peacefully on Veterans Day, Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at the Claystone Healthcare Center in Ennis. He was born Dec. 17, 1916 in Alma, the son of Frank E. and Emilie Vrla Valek. Joe served our nation in World War II with the 405th Bombardment Squardron and participated in campaigns in New Guinea, Luzon, the Northern Solomon's, Papua and the Bismarck Archipelago. He was awarded five Bronze Stars and the Philippine Liberation Medal. On June 16, 1949 he was married to Frances Rheay. He was employed by Southern Pacific Railroad for 20 years. He then worked for the city of Dallas for 25 years, spending much of the time with the city-owned radio station, WRR. Mrs. Valek preceded him in death on April 19, 1997. He was a member of the Catholic Church and the IOOF. He is survived by sisters-in-law, Lillian Parma Valek, Helene Zaloudek Valek and Justine Valek; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, George, Bill, Frank and Raymond and his sister, Emily. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Myrtle Cemetery Chapel with Chaplain Dan Rogers officiating. Interment will be Myrtle Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary.
