Brachtenbach 1931-2008 A graveside service was held May 9 at the Pleasant Hill Pioneer Cemetery for Robert Francis Brachtenbach of Cottage Grove, who died May 2 of cancer. He was 77. He was born January 28, 1931, in Sidney, Nebraska to Henry and Elizabeth (Morfeld) Brachtenbach. He married Nancy Clark, with whom he had five sons. They later divorced. Robert grew up in Yakima, Wash., graduated from the University of Washington Law School and entered private practice in Selah, Washington. He was twice elected to represent his district in the state legislature . In 1972, Robert became a justice of the Washington State Supreme Court, serving as Chief Justice in 1981-83. He initiated the state-wide court computer system which became a national model. He retired from the Court in 1995. Robert married Marilyn Hammond in 1977 and spent many years enjoying his passions of reading, gardening, photography, painting, beachcombing and woodworking. He built an extensive library of books by and about Winston Churchill, whom he greatly admired. Bob and Marilyn lived in Olympia and Ocean Shores in Washington and in Cottage Grove where Marilyn remains. Survivors include his wife, Marilyn, five sons, Rick of Seattle , Wash., Jeff of Yakima, Wash., Randy of Lakewood, Wash., Curtis of Philadelphia, Penn., and David of Seattle, Wash, six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Travis Brachtenbach.
