Lewis was born in Benton (present-day Cleburne County), Alabama. Both of his parents died when he was three (3) years old. His Death Certificate has a death date of 10 Feb 1919. The death date on his tombstone is 2 Dec 1918. Lewis was named after his father's brother, Lewis Johnson Ledbetter and his paternal grandfather, Johnson Ledbetter. CIVIL WAR RECORD on LEWIS J. LEDBETTER The following is Lewis Johnson Ledbetter's Civil War record: He originally enlisted in Company D, 2nd Battalion, North Carolina Vol. Inf. as 3rd Sergeant 22 July 1861. Appointed 2nd Sergeant 3 July 1863. Transferred to New County E, 21st Regt. Georgia. Inf. 11 Apr 1864. Captured at Spotsylvania, Virginia. 10 May 1864. Paroled at Ft. Delaware, Del. Feb. 1865.
