Nancy Perkins Sex: F Birth: 1780 in North Carolina Death: 1869 Burial: Glass Window Cem., Slagle, Vernon, Louisiana Note: According to Maxine Naff, the Perkinses were Indians, with the wife as family head, using her name instead of her husband's (matriarchy). According to Jean Cupp Plummer: Nancy died during the Civil War. She migrated to western Louisiana with several closely related families, probably led by Rev. Joseph Willis. One source says Nancy's father was James Perkins. Nancy kept the Perkins name for her children, and since we know from family lore that her near descendants were mostly Indian, the evidence points to a culture which is a Matriarchy. This social organization recognizes the mother as the head of the family, succession coming through her, instead of the father. This is probably why Nancy, and others, used their surnames for the children. This was one custom of many cultures and still is in some countries. In 1830, the census showed Nancy, Mrs. Stephen, Joshua, George and Lewis Perkins, along with Moses, James, Tapley and Lepe Ashworth all living in close proximity as Indians. They lived in St. Landry Parish. In 1850, Nancy's sister Elizabeth Perkins was living with her, also used the Perkins name for her family. In 1860 Nancy is shown living with her daugher, Sarah and her husband Joseph W. Calhoun. Also in the home was James Abner Perkins at 9 years, we think the son of Reason Perkins.
