Monday, Dec. 27, 1999 deseretnews.com Donald N Evans, beloved father and grandfather, died December 24, 1999, at the age of 76 at his home in Orem. He was born March 28, 1923, in Lehi, Utah, to Noble and Lela Varney Evans. He married Laura Jeanne Brown on October 13, 1943, in San Angelo, Texas. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.Don graduated from Lehi High School in 1941 where he excelled in tennis, football, basketball and student government. He attended Brigham Young University briefly until he enlisted in the United States Army Air Force during World War II. He served in the European Theater of War as a P-47 Thunderbolt fighter pilot. His plane was shot down on December 24, 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge. Don was a prisoner of war in Germany until the war ended. After he was liberated by Russian soldiers, he returned home to complete his education and graduated from BYU in 1947. Don and Laura moved to Orem, Utah, in 1951 where they made their home and raised their family. He was a successful businessman and was involved in many civic duties including serving as a member of the Alpine School District Board of Education. Don enjoyed playing golf, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren, especially at "The Cabin" that he built in Fairview, Utah. Don was a great example and inspiration to his friends and family and will be missed by all. He was patient, humble, compassionate and enjoyed a wonderful sense of humor. His life of church service demonstrated his love for the Lord and he accepted each call with humility. Don served in many church positions including: two bishoprics, stake clerk, counselor and Stake President of the Orem Utah Stake. He continued his life of service at the Missionary Training Center in Provo where he served as a Branch President and then second counselor in the MTC Presidency. He is survived by his wife, Laura; and four children, Kenneth D. Evans (Sandra), Lehi; Michael J Evans (Heidi), Highland; Susan, Salt Lake City; Jeanette, West Jordan; 11 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, LaRae Shelley of American Fork. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Duane and James Merle. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 29, 1999, at 11 a.m. in the Orem Sixth Ward Chapel, 365 South 900 East, Orem. A viewing will be held for friends and relatives on Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 East 800 North, Orem, and Wednesday morning at the church from 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will be at the Orem City Cemetery.
